Hi neighbors,
That concrete channel along Bucknell Drive wasn’t always a storm drain. It used to be a stream, part of the Wheaton Branch, and it still carries rain from downtown Wheaton through Evans Parkway Park and on into Sligo Creek.
This Sunday, November 1, at 3:00 PM, neighbor Justin Baer leads a short walk along the channel to share what he’s learned about its history and how the neighborhood grew up around it. Byron Wild, chair of GNA’s new Environmental Committee, will say a few words about the committee. Then it’s cider and snacks at the playground.

Sunday · 3:00 PM
Watershed walk, then cider
Meet at the corner of Bucknell Drive & Windham Lane. The walk takes about 45 minutes and ends at the Evans Parkway Park playground, with cider and snacks from about 3:45.
Clocks fall back that morning, so it’s dark by about 5:10. The walk is on open streets, so keep little ones close.

Skipping the walk? Come straight to the playground and say hello.

Environmental Committee
A good first meeting, and what comes next
Thank you to the neighbors who came out on October 24 for the committee’s first meeting around the fire pit. The conversation covered food forests and foraging, watershed advocacy in the Wheaton Master Plan, working with Glen Haven Elementary, the Wheaton Branch near Dennis Avenue, and help getting started with composting and native plants.
|
What’s next
Next meeting: late November, date to be set. The committee plans to meet monthly. Reply to this email if you’d like to be on the list.
Talking with the county. Byron meets with Montgomery County DEP’s Watershed Restoration Division on November 4, and will ask the county for another round of public input on the Wheaton Branch work near Dennis Avenue.
A heads-up for winter. The committee hopes to host a neighborhood-wide gathering in January or February to build one list of Glenview’s environmental requests for the Master Plan, the way neighbors have done for sidewalks.

The committee now has its own page on the website. It’s new and just getting started: glenview20902.org/environment.

From the October 1 meeting
What Montgomery Planning heard from Glenview
At our fall meeting, 23 neighbors sat down at small tables with Montgomery Planning staff. As promised in our recap, here is Planning’s summary of those notes.
|
From Montgomery Planning
“Our staff all said it felt positive and helpful … We look forward to continuing to collaborate with you.”
Maren Hill, Montgomery Planning
|
Seven key takeaways
| 1 |
Walkability and pedestrian safety are the top priority. |
| 2 |
Growth near transit has support, if infrastructure comes with it. |
| 3 |
Wheaton’s diversity and local businesses are core strengths. |
| 4 |
Neighbors want more gathering places, like coffee shops and plazas. |
| 5 |
Parks are valued, but need more shade, amenities and programming. |
| 6 |
Arts and entertainment fall short of what neighbors hope for. |
| 7 |
Neighbors want the Master Plan to lead to visible, practical results. |
|
Closer to home
• Dennis Avenue was named among the corridors that are hard to walk.
• Glen Haven Park and parts of Evans Parkway felt underused.
• Neighbors asked for permanent park restrooms and more shade trees.
• There was interest in recognizing Wheaton’s African American history.
• Neighbors want to hear from more voices, especially Spanish-speaking residents.
|
Everyone at the tables was a homeowner, and 10 of the 23 were 65 or older. If that doesn’t describe you, the November 5 workshop is a good place to add your voice.
