Thank you to everyone who came out to our annual meeting at Glen Haven Elementary! We had a packed agenda with a special guest, officer elections, and some exciting community updates. Here's everything you need to know.

MCPS Boundary Study & Regional Programs
We were glad to welcome Laura Stewart, our District 4 representative on the Montgomery County Board of Education. Laura shared updates on two major initiatives heading to a board vote on March 26:
Boundary Study (Middle & High School)
Under the superintendent's recommendation, Glen Haven students would attend Sligo Middle School and Northwood High School — with no split articulation. Northwood is getting a brand-new $198M building with capacity for 2,700 students (expected to open August 2027), a reduced FARMS rate, and strong leadership under Principal Dr. Jonathan Garrick.
Regional Programs Model (6 Regions)
MCPS is proposing a new six-region model for specialized programs, replacing the current countywide/consortium approach. Programs are classified as interest-based (I) with a lottery or criteria-based (C) with admission based on meeting specific criteria. Key points from the discussion:
- Criteria-based programs should have enough capacity for all eligible students (no more 10-applicants-for-1-seat scenarios)
- Host-school students will have a portion of program slots reserved for them
- Northwood will have new programmatic offerings in the new building
- Einstein retains visual arts, IB, and music — and gains medical science/biotech
- Laura is pushing for regular board check-ins on how programs are performing
Community members and a Blair HS teacher raised important questions about staffing impacts, curriculum development timelines, and whether enough attention is being paid to core literacy and math skills for the majority of students who will stay at their home schools. Laura acknowledged these concerns and committed to following up.
Meet Your New Board
Our slate of officers was unanimously approved! A huge thank you to outgoing VP Catherine Soffronoff and outgoing Secretary Byron Wild for their service. Here's your new board:
President: April Giandomenico
Returning president since 2023. Mom to a 7-year-old at Rockview (formerly Glen Haven) and a 4-year-old heading to kindergarten this fall. Long-time community advocate.
Vice President: Cody Henderson
Dennis Ave resident for nearly 6 years (10 years in the area). Dad to a 2-year-old with another on the way in October. Teaches at Georgia Tech, does nonprofit accounting and consulting. Passionate about mutual aid and community building.
Secretary: Alexander Lataille
Dennis Ave resident for 5 years. Dad to a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old. Works in technology consulting and plans to bring digital tools to GNA's communications and infrastructure.
Treasurer: Jen Marlay
Returning treasurer and 10-year neighborhood resident. Glen Haven parent with a kindergartener and second-grader. Brings experience from prior nonprofit board treasurer roles.
Treasury Update
We ended the year with just under $1,800 (mostly from the Block Party — thank you!). We're planning to put at least $250 toward marketing materials to help grow awareness of the association beyond our current membership.

Coming Up
Safe Routes to School — Virtual Meeting
Thursday, March 26 at 7:00 PM (Virtual only, via Microsoft Teams)
MCDOT is holding a virtual public meeting specifically about the Glen Haven ES and Sligo MS Safe Routes to School Safety Improvement Project — including proposed sidewalks and pedestrian safety improvements for our neighborhood. During the feedback period, 135 households responded in favor, and several additional sidewalk requests were incorporated into the updated plan. The Bucknell sidewalk placement (side vs. median) is still under discussion. This is a great chance to show continued support and ask questions.
Glen Haven Green Fest
Sunday, April 19 at Glen Haven Elementary (10900 Inwood Ave)
The annual family-friendly community celebration featuring new tree plantings and environmental activities. A wonderful way to connect with neighbors and enjoy the spring. Hosted by the Glen Haven ES PTA.
Sligo Creek Fest — GNA Booth!
Saturday, May 2, 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM at Sligo-Dennis Avenue Local Park
Montgomery Parks transforms Sligo Creek Parkway into a street festival with live music, food trucks, kid activities (Touch-A-Truck, tree climbing), roving entertainers, and more. GNA has a booth this year — we need volunteers to help staff it and spread the word! A signup sheet is on the way.
Social Committee
The September Block Party is confirmed as returning. More planning to come — stay tuned for opportunities to get involved.
